Most people will consider you very well off once you hit 100k+ a year, and the same people will consider an internship something you only do for summer in between your 3rd and 4th year of college. So why isn’t it a clear choice when I compare Deloitte and Causecast? Wouldn’t anyone flip for the former?

For the past three years my mom has told everyone that I work for Deloitte, and she constantly tells me how they automatically recognize the name and assume I am going to be a very successful business man. After all, it was the #1 place to launch your career in 2007 according to Businessweek; this year it’s #2.  My dad even asked me to start paying for rent, because after this years raise I’ve officially surpassed him.  A lot of people would die to be in my position, amongst the elite firms of the world, in a highly respectable practice of Management Consulting, and at a pretty young age.

On the other hand there is Causecast, which delves into the non-profit spectrum of things.  They aim to help non-profit organizations on the home front, where they intend to showcase the mission, inform the crowd, and activate the good in all of us through social media.  I tried to explain to my Mom what is going on, and she got caught up in telling me that I should give Deloitte 1 month instead of 2 weeks.  She wasn’t as excited, but she’s a good mom that wants to see me happy.

Causecast has about 165,000 less employees than Deloitte.  They are only 8 months old as a company, and there was no talk about benefits or salary when I recently met the team.  My friend Morgan asked if I was going to take a pay cut and I responded, “Nope… I’m taking a pay impale.”  So to finally cut to the chase, why am I leaving Deloitte for an internship?  The answer is really clear to me…
